The bottom of this list is dominated by players who are more possession-based, such as Chris Godwin and Diontae Johnston. The Bucs are likely to shift the latter two players into the slot more often during this season, which could increase their targets. However, they'll have to improve their scoring on the perimeter to maintain their top-of-the-line performance.
Speedy wideouts are the main benefits of moving into the slot, because they generally have an easier time getting open downfield when their route isn't obstructed by a cornerback or linebacker. The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list who can benefit from more slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable target on short and intermediate routes.
The last spot on the list includes more possession-based receivers who are better on intermediate and short routes than deep ones, such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is expected to be the Rams' primary slot receiver this season is a sleeper choice. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a larger role in downfield targets. Hamler is expected to excel on shorter-to-mid and intermediate routes, as it was where he excelled when playing for the Bills in 2021. Hamler could be a great replacement for the departed wideout Jordan Matthews.
Percentage of Snaps In Slot
The percentage of snaps a receiver plays in the slot is an excellent indicator of their ability to play deep routes. However, it's not always a true representation of a receiver's skills because some receivers excel in the slot, but aren't able to play deep and vice versa.
For instance, the Eagles' Alshon Jeffery leads the league in the number of targets per game (4.8) but is only placed sixth in the slot receiving score (58.5). This is because the majority of his targets are from outside and it's difficult to make a first down on a wide-open, deep and wide-open route.
Some receivers are better at playing inside, while others struggle to do so on the outside. For instance the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps this season, and he ran 74 percent of his slot routes compared to just 26% on boundary routes. This is an enormous difference that shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he is aligned to the slot.
Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays inside the majority of his passes and has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). He also ran 51% of his perimeter routes and is a master in one-on-1 coverage.
Speed receivers are typically more efficient when they line up inside, since they can get targeted way down the field and often find themselves with one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll find names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper in the top five on our list.
On the flip side, we've got some great slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie leads the NFL in forced fumbles having seven, while Moore is the most effective tackle-stop performance (-3.5) on this list. By deploying McDuffie in the slot when they're running nickel or dime packages, and then deploying him on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his capabilities. Additionally, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been a huge advantage when playing in the slot.
Percentage of Snaps Outside
While the NFL's top receivers such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's worth noting that their slot counterparts are also good. Wide receivers with high slot grades score touchdowns in the same way as those on the outside. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to outside and slot receivers, compared to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.
That's why it's interesting to see a player like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 because he plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than most of the players on this chart. This is a great opportunity to increase matchup benefits for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the highest-graded receiver in our system.
He also plays at the X-position, and can make big plays outside. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the other players in this ranking but he's highly skilled and is a great player for the Cowboys scheme.
Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player who's capable of posting big numbers on both kinds of targets. He's among the top players in the league when it comes to taking throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a superb player who can play contested catch.
Another player on this list who's an authentic slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has played in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks aligned in the slot, making him an important player in the defense of his team. On the other hand, he's struggled to block passes from the outside and has given the negative EPA against these kinds of targets. This is the result of playing with subpar linebackers and safeties that can't match up with Hilton's size, speed and route-running ability.
